The Marietta History Center invites the community to an engaging Evening with History Lecture on Monday, April 20, at 6:00 PM, featuring acclaimed historian and author Pamela D. Toler, PhD. Doors open at 5:30 PM, followed by a lecture, book signing, and small reception.
Dr. Toler will discuss her book Heroines of Mercy Street: Real Nurses of the Civil War, which explores the real nurses of the Civil War and the transformation of ordinary buildings into wartime hospitals. Heroines of Mercy Street was the inspiration for the PBS series Mercy Street. The topic resonates deeply with Marietta history: the Marietta History Center building itself once served as a hotel and was later used as a hospital during the Civil War, much like the structures featured in Heroines of Mercy Street.
Armed with a PhD in history and an infectious curiosity, Pamela D. Toler writes historical nonfiction for a popular audience. She is known for going beyond familiar narratives to tell stories from the other side of the battlefield, the gender line, and the color bar. Toler is the author of ten books for children and adults, including Women Warriors: An Unexpected History, The Dragon From Chicago: The Untold Story of an American Reporter in Nazi Germany, and Heroines of Mercy Street: Real Nurses of the Civil War.

The mission of the Marietta History Center is to ignite curiosity in Marietta's history by connecting people through compelling stories and engaging experiences.
Welcome to the Marietta History Center located in Marietta, Georgia. Open since 1996, the Center’s galleries and exhibits are housed on the second floor of the historic Kennesaw House building. The Center houses the largest collection artifacts relating to Marietta and Cobb County’s history. Originally built as a cotton warehouse in 1845, the building was remodeled to become the Fletcher House Hotel in 1855. During the Civil War the hotel temporarily served as a makeshift hospital. For this reason, the building has become the subject of many stories and local ghost folklore. This notoriety has led to appearances on CNN, The History Channel and PBS. Today the Center houses galleries and exhibits featuring collections from General History, Home Life, and Military. The Marietta History Center is dedicated to preserving the history of Marietta and Cobb County, join us in preserving our past
